How the Idea of Solar Energy for Our Vineyard House Was Born

How the absence of electricity led our family to the sun.

The dream of having a small vineyard house wasn’t only mine. My wife and children had the same longing for years. Whenever we escaped the city for a short break, all of us felt the same peace. And almost every time on our way back, someone in the car would say: “I wish we had a place like this of our own…”

As my retirement approached, this dream slowly stopped being just a wish. Even the kids started asking, “Dad, when are we going to look at vineyard land again?” After a long search, we finally found a small plot that fit our budget.

When my wife first stepped onto the land, she smiled and said, “This place feels right for us.” The kids immediately ran around, exploring every corner. In that moment, something settled inside me.

But the land had one big issue: no electricity. When I told this to my wife, she hesitated a bit. “Won’t that be a problem?” she asked. The kids jumped in right away: “How are we going to charge our phones?”

Strangely, I wasn’t worried. Maybe it was because I had been interested in solar panels for years— watching videos, reading forums, trying to understand how off-grid systems worked. Something inside me whispered, “This might actually be an opportunity.”

Each time we visited the land, I noticed the sun more. At noon, the entire place was so bright the kids were searching for shade. One afternoon, while we were all resting and drinking tea, the sun was slowly setting. I looked around and said quietly to my wife: “There’s no electricity here… but actually, there is.”

She looked confused. “What do you mean?”
“The sun. It lights this place all day long. Maybe we should get our electricity from the sun.”

She chuckled softly. “I knew you were thinking about something.” The kids immediately turned it into excitement: “Dad, that would be so cool! Our own electricity!”

On the drive back home, we were all thinking the same thing. Pulling grid electricity would be expensive and complicated. But producing our own energy felt different—it felt like freedom. That’s how the idea of solar energy slowly entered our lives.

In the following days, I started researching seriously. My wife helped me compare prices, read reviews, and think through what we truly needed. Even the kids bragged to their friends, “My dad is going to make electricity from the sun.”

Honestly, this whole process brought us closer as a family. Looking back now, the lack of electricity—something that seemed like a disadvantage at first— was actually what pushed us toward the right path. The idea of solar energy wasn’t just a technical solution.

It became a shared curiosity, a shared decision, and the beginning of something new for all of us. Maybe that’s how dreams come true: something that looks like a problem ends up opening the door to something much better.
